The SilentPower LAN iSilencer was kindly provided free of charge in exchange for an honest review. I didn’t receive monetary or any other kind of compensation and I don’t use affiliate links.

The price of the LAN iSilencer is €89 and you can buy it from SilentPower’s online shop or authorised dealers around the world.

SilentPower

If SilentPower doesn’t ring a bell, iFi certainly does. iFi is a well known and established British brand that makes high quality audio devices (desktop and portable sources, amplifiers and combo units) that have won many press awards and the love of audiophiles.

SilentPower is iFi’s sister brand that was founded with the task to ensure that audio devices are fed with the most clean power and noise-free digital signals. In order to do so they make specialized power adapters, conditioners, cables and various other accessories that are used to provide a noise free working environment for your audio gear.

Simple plug ‘n play stick

SilentPower LAN iSilencer

Conditioners are special devices that use sophisticated techniques to clean (or purify if you prefer) the incoming power (DC or AC) and digital signals before they reach the audio equipment. They usually employ both passive and active circuits and often need external power in order to operate.

A much simpler device than the conditioner is the enhancer, a gadget that is more compact, uses passive filtering and seldom needs power to operate. Most enhancers are “plug ‘n play” sticks with an input for the dirty side and a purified output. They can be USB, LAN, HDMI or power enhancers depending on what type of signal needs to be cleaned.

The SilentPower LAN iSilencer is a LAN filter that eliminates interference and enhances network stability by reducing EMI noise and blocking unwanted signals other than data. It doesn’t do any magic tricks, it just uses science by employing a passive filtering circuit that removes the electrical noise from the incoming data streams, thus reducing interference that distorts the audio signal from the network.

The LAN iSilencer is also equipped with a galvanically isolated input to reduce digital jitter and overall system noise, while it also protects the equipment against voltage surges and transients.

The performance numbers are pretty spectacular for such a tiny filter, the LAN iSilencer provides 1500 Vrms of isolation, 400W peak pulse surge protection, and exceptional EMI suppression with a minimum rejection of 30dB at 100MHz through high-impedance common mode rejection.

Design and operation

The SilentPower LAN iSilencer is a stick made from high quality plastic compound that is adorned with diamond-like textured patterns. It is equipped with a female RJ45 input and a male RJ45 output with gold plated contacts.

It measures just 73.5x19x16mm and supports network speeds up to 1000Mbps. The LAN iSilencer is not only suitable for audio but also for every other application where clean data are essential, such as data centres or smart building installations.

For audio setups the only thing you have to do is to plug one LAN iSilencer before the LAN input of your network streamer or any other network enabled source. If your network uses a switch, then you can also experiment by connecting a LAN iSilencer into its input.

Listening impressions

The test set-up was pretty simple, I plugged a LAN iSilencer into the LAN input of both the Volumio Rivo Plus network streamer and the HIFIMAN SERENADE, a headphone DAC/amp with a built-in LAN streamer. I did much listening without the LAN iSilencer and then with it and then again without it. The device was evaluated over a period of at least one month, using both a two-channel speaker system and a variety of headphones.

Let me tell you that this little gadget actually works and does what it promises by reducing the overall noise floor and jitter of the incoming data streams. This translates into sound that has more natural timbre, less harshness on the treble and significantly reduced digital artificiality.

You can easily hear some extra clarity and definition throughout the whole frequency range but the audio system doesn’t become too analytical or revealing as it usually happens with other more advanced filters, like the SilentPower OMNI LAN.

This type of behavior can be considered as a con for users that need to get the most clarity and resolution out of their audio system but others will appreciate these tiny amounts of extra resolution that are not too much to lead into excessively clean and analytical sound.

The LAN iSilencer also helps the bass to sound more textured, tight and controlled while the soundstage opens up a little bit and it is much easier to pinpoint and focus on individual sound elements.

Purifying

More listing impressions

As it usually happens with all these types of enhancers, the positive effects of the LAN iSilencer get more noticeable when you remove it from the audio chain and revert back to the previous situation. It is then that you actually realize how beneficially it acts to improve the overall sound quality.

Not all audio set-ups are guaranteed to receive significant improvements from using the LAN iSilencer as they must be competent enough in order to let it cast its spell.

Furthermore, what the LAN iSilencer actually does is to address certain negative effects caused by unwanted noise and jitter that creeps into the streamer and will not transform your audio system into something else. The audible benefits can vary in intensity depending on the audio chain, however, even smaller ones are welcomed as they help improve the sound quality.

In the end

The SilentPower LAN iSilencer does what it promises and most chances are that it is going to improve the overall sound quality of your audio system without any side effects. It is so affordable that it is worth buying one to check out what it can actually do for your audio set-up.

Honestly speaking, it hasn’t replaced the (multiple times more expensive) EAhibrid Integrated Cyber Filter that I am using as the LAN purifier of my main audio system but the SilentPower LAN iSilencer has found a permanent place in my secondary system.
