FiiO FT5 Review
FiiO entered the full-sized headphones market a bit later than others, except for the FiiO EH3 NC model. However, they made a strong impact by introducing three models almost at the same time. The initial release was the FiiO FT3 350Ω, followed by the FiiO FT3 32Ω, and soon after came the FiiO FT5. While the first two models feature dynamic drivers, the FT5 stands out with its planar magnetic driver technology.
Technical highlights
The FiiO FT5 utilizes an advanced, 90mm large-sized planar magnetic driver unit that sets it apart. This driver incorporates a 6um ultra-thin diaphragm and a meticulously crafted micron-plated aluminum silver alloy voice coil. To further enhance sound reproduction, the driver undergoes a nanoscale-level coating process.
Moreover, FiiO has integrated the FT5 with a remarkably powerful Tesla-grade magnetic flux. This magnetic flux is generated by employing 20 high-power neodymium magnets on each side of the headphones, with 11 magnets inside and 9 magnets outside the driver. As a result, not only does this configuration ensure smoother and cleaner diaphragm movement, but it also grants the FiiO FT5 a high-sensitivity, making it effortless to drive.

Outer appearance and construction
The FiiO FT5 utilizes a significant number of magnets, resulting in increased weight. To counterbalance this, FiiO has chosen to construct the headphones using a magnesium-aluminum alloy, ensuring a lightweight design. This particular material is remarkably light, with a density that is only 64% of that found in traditional aluminum alloys.
Unlike many headphones, the FT5 does not incorporate any plastic components. Instead, the entire frame, headband, and ear-cups are crafted from metal, enhancing durability and quality. Additionally, the self-adjusting headband features an leatherette floating strap, providing enhanced comfort during extended use.
Not only are the grills of the FiiO FT5 visually appealing, but they are also scientifically engineered to effectively control and optimize airflow when the driver is in motion. The overall appearance of the FT5 strikes a balance between classic and modern aesthetics, exuding a sense of class and luxury that surpasses that of the FiiO FT3.
The FiiO FT5 is one of the best made and well constructed headphones, no matter the price, FiiO should be congratulated for the excellent workmanship and the choice of premium materials.
Wearing comfort
The FiiO FT5 boasts ear-pads with a larger inner diameter compared to the FiiO FT3, resulting in a more spacious and comfortable fit. Weighing 456g, the headphones evenly distribute their weight thanks to a well-designed headband. Moreover, the ear-cups feature a 3-axis swiveling mechanism, allowing for optimal positioning on the user’s face.
After extensive testing, it is evident that these headphones provide a comfortable experience with minimal clamping force, making them ideal for long listening sessions. However, it is worth noting that the air circulation may not be as efficient, potentially causing the ears to become slightly warm over time.
Interchangeable ear-pads
The headphone is equipped with two different types of ear-pads, namely suede and protein leather, which can be used to adjust the sound quality. Swapping the pads is a simple process as they are attached to the ear-cups using a plastic ring that buttons onto the outer frame. The protein leather pads offer a slightly higher level of comfort and provide a cooler sensation to the ears.
Cable
The FiiO FT5 is equipped with a detachable cable that boasts high quality. It features a dual 3.5mm interface on the headphone side and interchangeable plugs. The package includes 3.5mm and 4.4mm plugs, as well as 6.35mm and 4-pin XLR adapters. FiiO deserves praise for providing such a cable, which should be the standard for all headphone manufacturers.
Unlike the 3m long cable of the FiiO FT3 350Ω, this cable measures 1.5m in length. It is constructed with silver plated, monocrystalline copper wires of 24 AWG diameter. The cable is encased in a fabric outer sheathing, making it both durable and lightweight. However, it does have a slight stiffness to it.
Accessories
In addition to the premium cable and the two distinct earpad options, the FiiO FT5 boasts a lavish leather storage case and a plush velvet carrying bag. Other competitors in the market should take note of FiiO’s attention to detail when it comes to the included accessories, as this bundle is truly unparalleled regardless of the headphone’s price.
Power efficiency and associated gear
The FiiO FT5 has an impedance of 36Ω and an impressive sensitivity of 110dB/1 Vrms@1kHz. This makes it effortlessly powered by portable players and USB DACs, while also showcasing excellent performance when paired with desktop gear. Throughout my review, I had the opportunity to test it with a range of gear including the Cayin RU7, FiiO M15S, and Aune S9c Pro.
While the stock cable provided with the FiiO FT5 is already of high quality, I also experimented with a Lavricables pure silver cable. Additionally, I followed the usual practice of allowing the FiiO FT5 to play music continuously for 100 hours before conducting my listening evaluation.
Listening impressions
With the pleather pads as the reference point, the FiiO FT5 showcases a tuning with an extended low-end, followed by a slightly subdued mid-range and a present yet unobtrusive treble. However, if you switch to the suede pads, the tonal balance will shift towards a “V” shape, with a more pronounced mid-bass while the rest of the frequency range remains largely unaffected.
The pleather pads provide a reference-style tuning for the low-end, delivering a highly satisfying sub-bass extension and a bass that is subtly emphasized up to the lower mid-range. The bass is remarkably clear and well-defined, exhibiting excellent transparency and layering. There is no trace of cup reverb or distortion, as the bass remains tight and controlled with swift recovery and natural decay. The texture of the bass is weighty and full-bodied, almost visceral. The only aspect that slightly holds back the performance is the relatively lesser physical impact and punchiness, especially when compared to the FT3 350Ω or more expensive planar headphones.
Despite experiencing some recession in the mid-range, the presentation is remarkably authentic, delivering a predominantly natural timbre whether you’re listening to vocal or instrumental music. However, if you prefer prominent vocals, this may not be the ideal headphone for you as they are slightly pushed back in the mix. The texture of the sound is substantial and rich, making the sound spacious and full-bodied. It possesses the resolving and refined qualities that one would expect from this category.
Rising higher
To enhance mid-range transparency and definition, you can opt for the pleather pads, although this may come at the expense of some body weight. Alternatively, if you prefer a touch of warmth and a fuller, more organic mid-range sound, you can choose the suedes. However, this choice may result in a slight sacrifice in clarity and definition.
The higher frequencies exhibit a bold and vibrant quality, emitting a luminous sound that lacks any significant sharpness or harshness. By utilizing pleather pads, the treble gains greater transparency and extension, resulting in a slightly crisper and more sparkling tone, perhaps even a touch brighter. On the other hand, the suedes provide a smoother and more pleasant tuning, reducing sharpness and enhancing overall agreeability.
In terms of resolution, the FiiO FT5 delivers a highly satisfying performance within its category. The headphone’s technical capabilities and detail retrieval are commendable. While it may not be the most analytical or brilliantly sounding headphone, nor the most refined in the treble region, it distinguishes itself with its natural timbre and minimal treble artificiality.
Technical
The FiiO FT5 delivers a remarkably cohesive sound, where each note possesses a consistent thickness from the low-end to the treble, and they gracefully fade away at the same pace.
Its soundstage impresses with its expansive width and spaciousness, accompanied by superb horizontal panning and unexpectedly accurate imaging that rivals pricier headphones. However, it falls short in terms of depth, lacking in layering and failing to provide a sense of holography and grandeur. As a result, the listener may feel as though they are seated rather close to the performers.
The FiiO FT5 is a highly versatile and flexible headphone that caters to a wide range of musical preferences. For those seeking a more analytical and precise listening experience, the pleather pads offer exceptional tonal accuracy and transparency. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for a more enjoyable and relaxed session, the suede pads provide enhanced bass and a warm sound signature. With its adaptability, the FiiO FT5 ensures that you can enjoy all genres of music to the fullest.
The three musketeers
The FiiO FT3 350Ω, FT3 32Ω, and FT5 are a trio of headphones that deliver an impressive sonic performance, surpassing expectations for their respective categories. Each model offers a unique sound signature, allowing users to choose their preferred audio experience.
When comparing the FiiO FT5 to the already well-crafted FT3, the FT5 stands out with its superior build quality. The addition of a magnesium-aluminum alloy gives it a more premium feel, while its overall appearance exudes sophistication.
In terms of weight, the FT3 is lighter than the FT5. However, it falls short in terms of comfort due to its smaller inner diameter ear-cups, which provide limited space for the ears.
Among the three models, the FT3 350Ω boasts a deeper sub-bass extension and the most neutral tuning. It has a slightly bright and clinical sound with a monitor-like character. This model is highly technical, transparent, and crystal clear, delivering impactful bass. However, it may not be as full-bodied as the other two options and can sound drier in comparison.
The FiiO FT3 32Ω offers a smoother treble, a slightly warmer mid-bass, and authoritative bass, along with more present mids. This combination makes it an exceptional all-rounder headphone. However, when compared to the FT5, the FT3 lacks a bit in resolution and refinement. In terms of low-end, the FT3 32Ω delivers a more impactful and dynamic bass, although it may not be as well defined and controlled as the FT5.
Additionally, both versions of the FT3 do not provide the same wide and expanded soundstage as the FT5. Nevertheless, they make up for it with deeper layering and a grander, more holographic soundstage.
Compared to the HIFIMAN Edition XS
The HIFIMAN Edition XS features spacious oval-shaped ear-cups that provide a comfortable fit, surpassing the FiiO FT5 in terms of roominess. Additionally, it is lighter in weight. However, the headband of the FT5 excels in distributing the weight evenly and offers a more comfortable experience when worn on the head.
On the other hand, the FiiO FT5 boasts a significantly more premium appearance with superior materials and construction quality. Its cable surpasses that of the Edition XS by a considerable margin, and the Edition XS lacks any additional accessories.
The overall low-end response is very similar on both headphones but the Edition XS is tuned with less emphasis in the mid-bass and lower mid-range areas. The tuning of the XS is more neutral but with slightly recessed mids and a brighter treble. The Edition XS is a bit more transparent and clean sounding with better technicalities in the bass when it comes to definition and layering. It is also a tad faster and more controlled than the FT5 but not as impactful and dynamic while it is also drier and not as weighty or full bodied.
Compared to the HIFIMAN Sundara
The HIFIMAN Sundara stands out as one of the most sought-after mid-range headphones for good reason. It offers exceptional sound quality at a highly competitive price point. With its more neutral and almost linear bass tuning, the Sundara delivers a balanced audio experience. Additionally, it has noticeably more prominent mids compared to the FT5 but it is also brighter in the treble. The Sundara’s audio is crisp and energetic, showcasing superior technical capabilities in the low-end. However, it may lack the same visceral impact as the FT5, appearing drier in comparison.
In terms of comfort, the Sundara takes the lead with its lightweight design and larger ear-pads. This ensures a more pleasant listening experience, even during extended periods of use. On the other hand, the FT5 excels in build quality, utilizing premium materials and offering a superior cable. Furthermore, the FT5 comes bundled with a generous selection of accessories.
In the end
The FT5 represents FiiO’s inaugural venture into planar magnetic headphones, and it truly excels in every aspect. With a premium appearance and impeccable craftsmanship, this headphone delivers outstanding audio performance with remarkable technical prowess, all at a budget-friendly price point. Furthermore, it comes bundled with an array of top-notch accessories, making it one of the most comprehensive packages available on the market, regardless of its cost.
FiiO arrived slightly behind schedule, but their debut was truly remarkable as they unveiled three highly competitive headphones, each surpassing the other in quality. Among them, the FT5 stands out as a more refined and mature option compared to its younger siblings. FiiO’s rapid progress and significant advancements leave us curious about the exciting prospects that lie ahead for this innovative company.
