Listening impressions
The Neutron HiFi DAC V1 delivers exceptional audio quality, featuring a sound profile that merges outstanding fidelity with a rich musicality and predominantly natural timbre. Its frequency response is perfectly flat, resulting in crystal-clear and transparent sound with unparalleled definition and separation. The tuning remains neutral, ensuring that the device does not introduce any sonic characteristics of its own, nor does it alter the original sound in any way. It effectively serves as a conduit between the source material and the transducers, while maintaining a warm and engaging sound rather than a clinical or sterile one.
The DAC V1 provides an impressive bass performance, characterized by its extended, tight, and controlled nature, offering a very satisfying level of definition and layering. Its speed and precision, coupled with good timing, enable it to effectively handle complex tracks without sacrificing its pace or definition. The textures are remarkably full-bodied and weighty, resulting in a rich bass output that is far from lean or dry. Furthermore, it can deliver a dynamic and impactful sound, provided that its driving limits are respected.
The midrange offers a spacious and open sound, reminiscent of flowing spring water, with lush textures and surprisingly natural timbre. More listening impressions
The higher frequencies on the DAC V1 stand out from other devices using the ES9219Q DAC chip by avoiding a sterile or clinical sound, and maintaining a natural timbre. The energetic and luminous treble is well-controlled, steering clear of any harsh brightness. With exceptional clarity and definition, the DAC V1 proves to be remarkably resolving. The timbre remains natural, with rich textures and weighty tones across all frequencies, resulting in a cohesive sound without thinning or drying out in the higher ranges.
The soundstage offers an expansive and open quality, featuring exceptional imaging across the horizontal axis, allowing for precise placement of each instrument. Nevertheless, the overall presentation tends to be somewhat flat, lacking in depth layering or a three-dimensional effect. However, there is a notable absence of audible congestion, even when handling large-scale symphonic compositions.
The Neutron HiFi DAC V1 stands out from its competitors by effectively conveying the true essence of music rather than simply reproducing sound. While it may not possess the most organic and analog timbre, I must acknowledge that I was pleasantly surprised by the natural and vibrant listening experience provided by this reasonably priced device.
