iFi Hip Dac 3
The Hip Dac 3 represents the latest addition to iFi’s renowned line of battery-powered, portable USB DAC/amps. This compact device features a USB type-C input, along with two headphone outputs – one 3.5mm and one 4.4mm balanced.
The iFi Hip Dac 3 has been revamped with a sleek titanium shadow color for a classic yet modern look. In addition to the cosmetic changes, the device now features two USB type-C ports – one for charging and one for data input, allowing you to charge your device while listening to music. With support for up to 32bit/384kHz PCM, DSD256, and full MQA decoding, this device offers high-quality audio performance.
Additionally, there is a switch located on the underside that enables iFi’s iEMatch technology, designed to reduce noise and improve volume control when using high-sensitivity headphones and earphones. This functionality is accessible for both headphone outputs. The Hip Dac 3 also includes support for the user-selectable bass boost analog circuitry, known as XBass. iFi’s XSpace feature is not included.
Under the hood
The Hip Dac 3 boasts numerous circuit improvements internally, such as the incorporation of new metal film capacitors to enhance frequency response. Moreover, an upgraded iteration of iFi’s GMT circuitry, combined with a new crystal oscillator, effectively minimizes phase noise for a cleaner audio output.
This iteration of the Hip Dac continues to incorporate a Burr-Brown DAC chip, paired with a 16-core XMOS microcontroller. The microcontroller has been meticulously programmed by iFi’s internal team to enhance sound quality and guarantee an ideal high-resolution collaboration with the Burr-Brown DAC.
The hip-dac 3 is equipped with a genuine balanced circuit design aimed at reducing signal distortion. It is built with top-notch components such as a custom iFi OV op-amp, a low-noise power supply IC from Texas Instruments, and a high-quality analogue volume pot.
Appearance and build quality
The Hip Dac 3 features an aluminum alloy chassis in a sleek titanium shadow finish. Its build and assembly are excellent, with a robust enclosure, a volume control wheel that rotates smoothly, and buttons that are securely fitted. Measuring 102x70x14mm and weighing just 135g, the compact and lightweight design makes it convenient to carry in a spacious pocket.
On each end of the rotary volume control, there are two LEDs that switch colors to show the format and sampling rate of the audio being received. Additionally, two small notification LEDs let you know if high gain and XBass features are turned on or off. At the rear of the unit, there is another LED that displays the current battery charge status.
Battery duration
The iFi Hip Dac 3 features a 2200mAh battery that requires approximately 2 hours to achieve a full charge, offering a playback duration of around 7 to 8 hours, contingent on the load and volume settings.
Accessories
The bundle consists of three USB cables (C to C, A to C, Lighting to C) and four adhesive rubber feet for desktop application. Customers have the option to buy a protective case in grey faux suede separately.
Power output and noise
The iFi Hip Dac 3’s amp stage is capable of providing a maximum of 400mW/32Ω through the balanced output. While not as powerful as the FiiO Q11, which can deliver 650mWpc/32Ω, it is still sufficient for driving a range of headphones, such as the FiiO FT5 or the HIFIMAN Arya Organic.
Moreover, delivering a 6.3V output voltage to 600Ω from the balanced output enables it to effectively power high impedance headphones. While 600Ω headphones are uncommon nowadays, I have tried the 300Ω Sennheiser HD660S2 and was extremely pleased with the results.
The noise floor is exceptionally low when using sensitive earphones such as the FiiO FX15, and it disappears entirely upon activating the iEMatch feature. The amplifier offers two gain settings, low and high, to optimize compatibility with different loads.

The audio profile of the iFi Hip Dac 3 is smooth, authentic, and earthy. It embodies the classic iFi sound, diverging from the more neutral and clinical tones found in other iFi products such as the iFi NEO iDSD (OG) or the Diablo (1 & 2).
The Hip Dac 3 offers a warm sound profile without compromising on transparency or technical performance. It delivers clean and clear audio with excellent fidelity and precision within its category. Its frequency response is perfectly linear, and its resolving and refined nature makes it a great match for high-end earphones and headphones.
The bass is quick, precise, and controlled, providing a satisfying layering even with a busy bass line. The Hip Dac 3 delivers a rich, heavy low-end that is impactful and dynamic, rather than dry or thin. While the technical aspects are impressive, they do not quite set the standard; for instance, the FiiO Q11 is slightly more tight and controlled, offering greater speed and accuracy, albeit at the expense of some body and impact. The XBass provides a substantial bass boost without overshadowing the mid-range, although the bass may lose some tightness and control.
More listening impressions
The mid-range exhibits a notably organic and analog character, characterized by vibrant harmonies and precise tonal fidelity. Instruments and vocals are rendered with remarkable authenticity, clarity, and rich overtones. The Hip Dac 3 outperforms all competing devices in its class regarding timbral realism and the lack of artificiality.
The treble exhibits similar characteristics, being both extended and vibrant, yet devoid of any harshness or brightness. The Hip Dac 3 delivers a smooth and polite sound profile, prioritizing musicality over mere technical precision. While it is not deficient in transparency, clarity, or detail, it can be outperformed by rival models, such as the FiiO Q11. However, the Hip Dac 3 offers a more organic sound, with richer textures and a more natural decay, making it feel less clinical and sterile.
The soundstage provides ample width and space, along with satisfying layering and imaging. While the FiiO Q11 excels in imaging precision and separation, the Hip Dac 3 offers a more immersive and engaging listening experience.
In the end
The iFi Hip Dac 3 is a high-quality, battery-operated USB DAC/amp that offers an impressive array of features while remaining lightweight and portable. Although it may not match the power of some competitors and lacks app connectivity, it excels with its deep black background and exceptional timbre quality.
