Dunu Titan S2
Dunu is literally the first manufacturer from China that made high quality earphones that competed head to head with mainstream brands like Sony, Sennheiser and AKG. They have been making earphones since 1994 and their products have earned numerous prestigious awards and reviews. You can read further Dunu reviews here.
The Titan model is maybe the oldest in Dunu’s catalog, an earphone that underwent a few revisions through the years and is still being produced. The latest model is the Titan S2, a slightly differently tuned version of the Titan S.
Technical highlights
The Dunu Titan S2 is a single dynamic driver earphone that adopts a high-rigidity dome with a flexible suspension surround composite diaphragm and a high-tension voice coil.
The dome itself is made from high-rigidity material with a high damping coefficient, accompanied by a longer-travel flexible surround. Dunu has also designed the Titan S2 with dual-chambers and a dual-magnetic circuit that provide efficient performance to the driver, making it easy to power while it also ensures stable output with low distortion characteristics.
Design and wearing experience
The ear-shells are made from high-density metallic alloy that is treated with a shiny, chromium-plating finish to ensure premium looks and better durability to tear and wear. The design is modern futuristic, the shells have an angular shape with asymmetrical lines and a characteristic red dot at the center of the faceplate. The Titan S2 is not the most discreet looking IEM but it is not too flashy either.
The shells of the Titan S2 are a little heavier than the average but they are compact sized enough and their angled design makes them comfortable to wear without going too deep into the ear cavity. The weight gets evenly distributed and the Titan S2 doesn’t feel uncomfortable even after hours of use.
Cable and accessories
The Titan S2 comes equipped with one of the best made cables within its category and more. It is a 2-pin detachable cable with four cores of mixed OCC copper and silver-plated OCC copper.
The cable features a swappable plug system with Dunu’s patented Q-Lock mechanism. This mechanism combines a snap-in plug with a screw ring to secure it at place. The package includes 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced plugs.
The outer surface of the cable is reinforced with a nylon mesh that helps reduce friction noise and enhance durability. An outstanding cable that doesn’t get tangled, is lightweight and a pleasure to use.
The package includes a high quality carrying case with a side zipper that is a little big but has plenty of inner space to accommodate the earphones together with a USB DAC dongle. The Titan S2 is also equipped with four different types of ear-tips in various sizes each.
The first two types are generic silicone ear-tips for a balanced sound signature or a slight bass boost. The other two types are designed by Dunu. The S&S ear-tips feature straight-wall construction and are designed to enhance the soundstage and offer studio grade performance. The Candy ear-tips are crafted from flexible silicone with thickened ducts for enhanced support and offer improved vocal density.
Driving efficiency
The Dunu Titan S2 is rated at 16Ω of impedance with 107dB/mW of sensitivity so it is really easy to drive. As an example, with the FiiO M23 low gain was more than enough from its balanced output and I didn’t need to get past half volume.
Listening impressions
The Dunu Titan S2 is a less neutrally tuned version of the Titan S, a warmer sounding earphone with a touch of extra bass boost, slightly subdued upper mid-range and a bit more emphasized treble in comparison to the previous model.
The low-end has decent sub-bass extension and a gently emphasized bass that doesn’t mask the mids or overpower the treble. The overall balance favors the fan side of the music but doesn’t exclude more attentive listening as long as you are willing to accept the lack of reference tonal accuracy.
The Titan S2 is a great all-rounder earphone, it did very well with playlists that included a mix of diverse tunes, even classical music. You can listen to all kinds of music and never think that the Titan S2 is severely lacking in anything or compromising the performance. It might not be the ideal option for every single type of music but it never feels as bad or unlistenable.
Technicalities are also very good for the category, the bass is clean, fast, tight and controlled with satisfying physical impact. It can lose composure on some difficult music passages but generally speaking it is well defined and textured without much echo and reverb. The textures are quite weighty and full bodied, the Titan S2 is an atmospheric sounding earphone that doesn’t feel thin or dry.
More listening impressions
The mid-range is tonally balanced without any significant recession or upper mid-range emphasis. The tuning is rather safe and you will not get fatigued even at louder listening volumes. The timbre is natural and organic enough with good levels of harmonic saturation. The sound is lifelike and engaging while clarity and definition are up to the task. The Titan S2 is not the most transparent sounding earphone but you can’t say that it is that much lacking either, while it compensates with its highly musical and enjoyable character.
The presence area is slightly elevated to give the amount of clarity and definition that is necessary to counterbalance the prominent bass and avoid dark and muddy elements. The treble has enough sparkle and energy to sound clean and brilliant without becoming bright or sharp. This is a rather smooth tuning that blends well with the lower frequencies in a cohesive and relaxed sound signature that is not lethargic or slow.
The treble might not be piercing or fatiguing but it is not deprived of some metallic artificiality and coarseness. The textures are weighty so cymbals and other high pitched instruments sound full bodied enough. The Titan S2 offers good detail retrieval for the category but it is not as resolving or refined as the Titan S.
The soundstage is wide and spacious but horizontally arranged without any depth layering worth noting. However it images quite well and doesn’t sound congested or boxy even when things start to get busy.
Vs the Dunu Titan S
As described earlier, the Dunu Titan S has a more neutral tuning with better tonal accuracy on the low-end but also a more prominent upper mid-range that can become fatiguing with certain tracks.
The Titan S is more suitable for critical listening because of its neutrality, higher level of technical performance and extra clarity. However it is not as smooth and expressive as the Titan S2 and can become strident and sharp on certain recordings. The Titan S is also a bit more clinical and sterile in comparison to the Titan S2 that sounds more natural and organic.
There are numerous other options at this price range, like the KEFINE Delci, too many to mention and you are encouraged to read the corresponding reviews and reach your own conclusions. The most notable sonic difference is that the Titan S2 has its own unique tuning rather than closely following the Harman target curve or a V-shaped profile as most other earphones do.
In the end
The Dunu Titan S2 is an ideal all-rounder earphone that does most things right rather than wrong and has a tuning that is really difficult to sound bad with anything you throw at it. A versatile earphone that is going to please almost everyone with most kinds of music and a great variety of sources.
Leaving sound quality aside, the Dunu Titan S2 is also exceptionally well made and comfortable to wear while it comes with one of the best cables on the market and a generous selection of ear-tips.
Combine all the above and it doesn’t come as a surprise that the Dunu Titan S2 represents an exceptional value for money and is a safe and strong recommendation for both seasoned and new hobbyists alike.
