FiiO JD1 Review (Type-C version)
The J series of earphones is a collaborative effort between FiiO and Jade Audio, the sister brand of the company that specializes in manufacturing affordable and economical audio products.
The FiiO JD1 is a beginner-friendly, single dynamic driver earphone that is perfect for individuals who are new to the hobby or anyone in need of an additional pair of lightweight earphones for their daily music listening and phone calls while on the move.
The JD1 comes with a 10mm liquid crystal polymer (LCP) dynamic driver, which is lightweight and extremely rigid. Additionally, it incorporates FiiO’s unique asymmetrical internal and external magnetic circuit design, previously featured in other products like the pricier FT3. Unlike the conventional approach of using a single internal or external magnet, this asymmetrical design significantly enhances the magnetic field density around the voice coil. As a result, it delivers a more impactful and resilient sound, along with improved transient response.

Appearance and wearing comfort
The FiiO JD1 is an incredibly budget-friendly option that doesn’t compromise on its appearance. Its ear shells are designed with ergonomic precision and crafted from a high-quality plastic compound. The faceplates, made from zinc-alloy and hand polished, have a stunning glossy finish. However, it’s worth noting that these faceplates have a tendency to attract fingerprints. To ensure longevity, the sound tube is constructed from durable aluminum alloy. The FiiO JD1 comes in two attractive variations: semi-transparent black ear shells with obsidian back faceplates, and fully transparent ear shells with silver faceplates.
The ear shells have a compact and lightweight design, weighing only 7g each. They offer a stable and exceptionally comfortable fit, making them ideal for extended periods of use or as earphones for sleep. Additionally, they provide good passive noise attenuation making them suitable for use even in noisy surroundings.
Cable with type-C audio adapter
The FiiO JD1 is available for purchase with two different cable options. You can choose between a regular 2-pin detachable cable with a 3.5mm plug or a cable that terminates in a type-C audio adapter (DAC). This feature is particularly convenient for people who own phones without a 3.5mm plug or for those who desire enhanced audio performance without the hassle of carrying portable USB DACs.
The HD microphone included in both cables is also equipped with in-line controls. It features a central button that serves multiple functions such as answering/hanging up calls, playing/pausing music, and skipping to the next/previous track. The other two buttons are adjusting the volume and also for selecting the EQ settings in the type-C cable.
The cable appears sturdy, however, the plastic sheathing gives it a low-quality feel and it tends to retain a bent shape, making it difficult to straighten. While FiiO is recognized for producing top-notch cables, this particular one falls short of their typical excellence.

Accessories
Three pairs of ear-tips are included along with the cable.
The embedded Equalizer
The type-C adapter cable of the FiiO JD1 offers a range of Equalizer settings to customize the sound signature. There are five options available: Default, Bass Extension, Treble boost, Vocal, and Harman Reference. To switch between these settings, simply press the volume up and down buttons simultaneously. A female voice prompt tone will indicate the current selection each time. By default, the JD1 is set to the Default option. However, upon reconnecting the device, it will remember the EQ setting from the previous shutdown.
The EQ proved to be highly efficient in adjusting the sound signature, without any unwanted distortion, clipping, or significant deviation from the default target curve. This remarkable feature greatly enhances the versatility of the FiiO JD1.
Listening impressions
The initial observation to make is that the type-C cable allows for 15 levels of volume adjustment in Android OS host device. Although it can produce sufficient volume for the JD1, it falls short of maximizing its potential compared to a standard cable paired with an external USB DAC.
The JD1’s sound profile, when paired with the type-C cable set to its default setting, is characterized by a casual tuning designed to provide overall satisfaction across different music genres. While it may not stand out in any particular category, it delivers an enjoyable listening experience across a wide range of musical selections.
The tuning style follows the Harman 2019 target curve, although there are some deviations present. Users can also choose the Harman EQ option for a more precise match with this curve.

More listening impressions
The JD1 offers impressive sub-bass extension and a rich bass response, characterized by a prominent emphasis on mid-bass that adds warmth and thickness to the sound. While it may not be the most tonally accurate, you can certainly feel the bass resonating in your ears and experience a satisfying rumble. However, there is a noticeable bleed into the midrange and some bloating. Despite this, the driver is not sluggish, delivering adequately fast and tight bass that is also reasonably controlled. Although it lacks some discipline, the JD1 still provides decent layering and definition for the asking price. Overall, it is a suitable choice for enjoying your favorite music while on the move or during your lunch break, as it is designed for such purposes.
The mid-range remains prominent and easily heard, even with some bleed from the bass causing a slight lack of clarity. Both vocalists and instrumentalists have their moments, although they may seem slightly set back. The textures are somewhat thin and dry, with the upper mid-range being more pronounced and lively without coming across as harsh.
The high frequencies are well-behaved and not overly sharp or piercing, yet they do lack some liveliness and definition. The tonal accuracy may not be top-notch, as there is a hint of artificiality and a metallic undertone to the sound which can come off as dry and thin. While the level of detail retrieval is average, the soundstage offers a decent amount of openness and space, although imaging and separation may not be particularly outstanding.
Closing thoughts and comparison
It is important to keep in mind that the FiiO JD1 is only priced at $27, which includes the audio adapter. Considering its affordability, the earphone performs well and meets satisfactory standards. In terms of competition, the Hidizs MS1 Galaxy, priced at $15.99, offers a similar sound quality and ergonomics, but comes with a superior cable.
Opting for the type-C version of the JD1 has its advantages. Not only does it offer convenience and reduced clutter, but it also provides the option of choosing from five distinct sound profiles. The sound quality is very good and similar to using an entry level USB DAC but the disadvantage is that you cannot go as loud as you wish.

In the end
The FiiO JD1 may not win any laurels , but it effectively fulfills its role as a budget-friendly, comfortable earphone ideal for daily use. The type-C model is a fantastic choice for beginners, possibly being the most cost-effective plug-and-play solution available.
