BGVP DMA Review

The BGVP DMA, short for Dream Armature, introduces a revolutionary earphone design with a unique 1DD+2BA+2BCD hybrid setup that integrates bone conduction and air conduction technologies. By combining these two technologies, the earphone aims to deliver an expansive and lifelike soundstage, addressing any frequency band loss typically experienced during air transmission.

The bone conductor drivers from Sonion are fine-tuned to emphasize lower mids rather than the low-end, deviating from the standard practice. This particular balanced armature bone conduction technology differs from the dynamic driver type in terms of vibration frequency, making it undetectable to the outer skin tissue. Operating between 100Hz and 10kHz, these bone conductors deliver optimal performance around 2.5kHz.

In addition, the front chamber is designed with three separate acoustic ducts to ensure independent sound production, reducing any interference between the drivers. To achieve accurate frequency division and clear details, metal acoustic damping is utilized. On the other hand, the back chamber includes a dedicated bone conduction shock hole to create a realistic sound field simulation.

DMA is equipped with the Sonion 2300 series balanced armature for the middle frequency range, providing excellent sound quality. Furthermore, it incorporates the Knowles RAD series balanced armature, known for its exceptional analytical performance, super high frequency linear extension, and remarkable transparency.

The dynamic driver of DMA features a nickel vibration film that is capable of withstanding high temperatures, resulting in an ultra-thin nanoscale diaphragm. The properties of nickel, such as its hardness, rigidity, fast heat conduction, and high specific elasticity, greatly contribute to the driver’s overall performance.

BGVP DMA
A view of the internals

Design and wearing comfort

BGVP partnered with the renowned 3D printing company, HeyGears Technology, to utilize advanced DLP-3D printing technology in creating the front cavity for precise molding. The use of clear resin material in the main body of the ear-shells ensures durability and impact resistance, while providing a transparent view of the internal components. The outer faceplate is crafted from CNC machined aluminum alloy, available in two attractive finishes – dianthus silver and dark blue. An engraved “Y” pattern at the center of the faceplate not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also functions as a venting mesh to alleviate bass pressure.

Despite the complexity of internal components, the ear-shells remain relatively compact and lightweight, featuring an ergonomic design for a comfortable and stress-free fit even during extended use. The overall build quality and finish are excellent, with the only notable aspects being the slightly sharp edges of the faceplates and the visible seam between them and the main body of the ear-shells.

Cable

BGVP has integrated DMA with a detachable and modular cable featuring an MMCX attachment system and snap-on interchangeable plugs. The package includes high-quality, polished aluminum 3.5mm and 4.4mm plugs. Constructed with a four-strand 6N single crystal, silver-plated copper, the cable boasts an outer sheathing made of transparent TPU material. Despite its slightly thick build, this cable is exceptionally durable, resistant to tangling, and produces minimal microphonic noise.

Accessories

In addition to the premium cable, the bundle comes with two varieties of silicone ear-tips in three different sizes for both vocals and bass, a set of memory foam ear-tips, and a stunning carrying case in an elegant white hue.

Power requirements and associated gear

The DMA has an impedance rating of 17Ω and a sensitivity of 106dB/mW, making it effortless to drive without requiring dedicated amplification. Nevertheless, it demonstrates good scalability and is somewhat susceptible to source interference, hence it is recommended to pair it with higher quality equipment than basic USB DACs. Throughout this evaluation, my primary setups included the FiiO M15S and EarMen Angel.

Listening impressions

The BGVP DMA boasts a sound signature characterized by rich sub-bass extension, pronounced bass and mid-bass, clear and natural mids, and a treble that is bright and lively yet pleasantly smooth. While the tuning leans towards warmth and coloration rather than neutrality, the earphones remain mostly balanced, avoiding a dark sound profile. Furthermore, they offer good transparency and overall clarity.

The sub-bass extension is superb, with a subtle yet pleasing boost in the deep low-end that enhances the experience with bass-heavy tracks without overpowering the overall sound. It is clear that this earphone proudly showcases its bass prowess, as the emphasis on the low-end extends all the way up to the lower mids. The bass itself is robust and powerful, delivering a punchy and dynamic impact. Overall, the listening experience is immersive and engaging, with the bass capable of shaking and rattling your senses. While the bass remains mostly tight and controlled, there are occasional moments of boominess and slow rebound.

The DMA excels in reproducing deep synthesized bass and percussion instruments, such as bass-drums, timpani, bass guitars, and electric bass. However, it struggles with low-pitched stringed instruments, particularly when multiple are playing simultaneously. This is because the mid and lower bass frequencies are overly emphasized, resulting in tonal inaccuracies, while the layering and definition fall short of top-tier performance so listening to densely orchestrated passages with numerous cellos and double-basses can become muddled and lacking in clarity. For large symphonic works, such as Mahler’s 2nd symphony, the DMA may not be the optimal choice.

More listening impressions

Fortunately, not all individuals have an inclination towards classical music, and the DMA truly excels in various other genres, such as contemporary pop and electronic. A significant factor contributing to its success is the impeccable clarity and well-balanced mid-range, which allows vocals to resonate with a resolute clarity, while the bass delivers a powerful impact. This means you can indulge in artists like Billie Eilish and revel in the pulsating beats without losing focus on the vocals. The mid-range exhibits a harmonious and captivating quality, characterized by a natural timbre, an invigorating atmosphere, and the absence of any harsh or fatiguing elements. The overall texture is substantial and opulent, devoid of any dryness, and possesses a remarkable fluidity despite utilizing a single BA driver.

The treble showcases excellent extension and cleanliness, delivering an energetic and lively sound with impressive levels of clarity, definition, and detail. There is a generous amount of light shed on the sound, along with a touch of brightness to balance out the warm low-end, resulting in a dynamic and sparkling sound that avoids any harshness or sharpness. While the textures may feel a bit drier this time around, they are not overly lean, and hints of balanced armature characteristics can be detected sporadically. The resolution and refinement are satisfactory but not exceptional, considering the utilization of a single balanced armature for each frequency range.

The BGVP DMA truly outperforms itself and exceeds expectations within its category, in terms of soundstage. The soundstage is expanded both horizontally and vertically, creating a three-dimensional and grand listening experience. Additionally, the separation and imaging capabilities surpass the average performance within its category. However, it falls slightly short in effectively conveying ambient information.

Vs the BQEYZ WIND ($239)

The BQEYZ WIND earphones feature a unique combination of a single dynamic driver and a custom bone conduction driver, delivering effective performance in the low and mid frequencies. The aluminum ear-shells are slightly more compact compared to the DMA model. While both earphones offer great comfort, the DMA’s ergonomic design better conforms to the outer ear’s shape. Additionally, the DMA boasts higher quality accessories such as the cable and carrying case, whereas the WIND comes with a wider selection of ear-tip options.

Together with the BQEYZ WIND

In terms of tuning, the WIND earphone is also known for its prominent bass, although it lacks the sub-bass extension found in the DMA. While the WIND may not be as dynamic and impactful as the DMA, its bone conduction driver effectively transfers low-end energy within your head. The textures on the WIND are leaner and not as visceral as those on the DMA, but it offers a slightly clearer and well-defined bass.

The mid-range is more noticeable in the WIND, particularly in its upper section where it receives a generous boost, resulting in a more energetic and luminous sound, albeit slightly brighter and sharper compared to the DMA. The WIND exhibits better frequency cohesiveness, but it is not as resolving and detailed as the DMA, both in the mid-range and treble. When it comes to soundstage, both earphones excel, with the WIND offering a more expansive and airy experience, while the DMA provides the most holographic soundstage.

In the end

The BGVP DMA is designed for individuals who desire a powerful bass experience without compromising on mid-range clarity and treble definition. Its unique tuning combines impactful bass with captivating mids and a velvety smooth treble, resulting in a sound profile that complements various music genres and is compatible with numerous audio sources. If you seek this particular signature, the BGVP DMA is an excellent option as it seamlessly integrates exceptional sound quality, a comfortable fit, and an abundance of premium accessories, all at an affordable price point.
