Technical highlights

The Diablo 2 is a portable DAC/amp powered by batteries, suitable for both home and mobile use. It features a Burr-Brown True Native DAC chip for accurate decoding, along with an XMOS 16-Core chip for processing audio data from USB and S/PDIF inputs. To eliminate jitter, a GMT (Global Master Timing) femto-precision clock and intelligent memory buffer are utilized. This device supports PCM 768kHz, DSD512, and complete MQA decoding.

The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 differs from other iFi DACs such as the NEO iDSD 2 in that it does not incorporate the analogue processing modes, XSpace and XBass II. Moreover, it is limited to supporting only the bit perfect digital filters and not the other options that are available in the NEO iDSD 2.

The PureWave dual-mono circuitry ensures optimal balance, enhancing clarity through channel separation and noise reduction. DirectDrive eliminates the necessity for coupling capacitors, while OptimaLoop utilizes customized feedback paths to enhance gain control and minimize distortion.

The utilization of xMEMS solid-state micro-speaker technology in Diablo 2 amplifies the capabilities of compatible IEMs and headphones.

Extra features vs the iFi iDSD Diablo 1

In comparison to its predecessor, the iFi Diablo 2 boasts enhanced power supply and amplifier designs, resulting in a remarkable 52% increase in balanced power output at 32Ω and an impressive 405% increase in balanced power output compared to the SE output at 600Ω. Moreover, this new model incorporates a Quietline control system, iEMatch for 3.5mm and 4.4mm, Bluetooth (Lossless) input, support for xMEMS, MQA over SPDIF, USB Type-C input, a volume locking mechanism, and an improved analogue volume control with enhanced accuracy (+/-0.6dB versus the previous 1.5dB).

However, it is important to note that the iFi iDSD Diablo 2 does have a few downsides. It is larger, heavier, and comes with a higher price tag of $300 compared to the original version.

Bluetooth receiver

The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 boasts wireless Bluetooth 5.4 technology, enabling seamless connectivity and supporting the advanced aptX Lossless codec for lossless CD-quality streaming. Despite the limited adoption of this codec, the Diablo 2 is also compatible with aptX Adaptive, aptX, LDAC, LHDC/HWA, AAC, and SBC codecs. With strong and stable Bluetooth reception, the device delivers outstanding sound quality, albeit with some minor degradation, especially in the treble range.

Design

The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 has increased in size and weight (166x85x28.5mm/455g) compared to the already large Diablo, making it less portable and more transportable. This device is not pocket-sized, so you will need a small carrying bag to take it with you on the go. Luckily, a premium carrying case is provided in the package.

The simple and industrial design is similar to its predecessor, but now boasts twenty-two curved rails for better cooling performance. Eight of these rails are compatible with four wind-shaped stands included in the package, allowing for vertical or horizontal placement to save space. The red/gray aluminum chassis is well-constructed and appears very robust, although the sharp corners and edges on the back side should be mentioned. The engraved channels may help with cooling, as the Diablo 2 runs quite cool, but they tend to attract dirt and are hard to clean.

Accessories

The package comes with a variety of accessories, such as a long USB type-C to C cable, a short USB type-C cable, and lighting cables, along with a USB type-A adapter. Additionally, there is a cable that converts the barrel jack of the iPower 2 power supply to a USB type-C jack. Included are 3.5mm to optical and 6.35mm jack adapters, as well as an iFi travel case complete with a shoulder strap.

Connectivity and operation

On the front panel of the Diablo 2, there are two headphone outputs (6.35mm and 4.4mm), xMEMS and gain switches, a volume control knob, which now includes a lock mechanism to prevent unintended adjustments, and an LED indicator that shows the input sampling rate.

There are two USB type-C ports located on the back panel, one for data input and another for charging. Additionally, there is a 3.5mm S/PDIF input, a 4.4mm line input/output, an input selection button, and a battery status LED. However, placing the battery status LED at the back was not a wise decision as it lacks practicality.

When you press the input button once, the Diablo 2 will enter Bluetooth pairing mode. The other digital inputs will be detected automatically, with USB being given priority over S/PDIF and both taking precedence over the line input. The line input is specifically for 3.5mm and in order for it to function, all digital inputs must be unplugged and Bluetooth must be switched off. Otherwise, this jack will serve as a line output.

Battery duration and DC mode

The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 is equipped with a 4800mAh battery as its power source, which can be conveniently charged through a dedicated USB type-C port. This allows for simultaneous charging and USB decoding. It takes approximately 5 hours to fully charge the battery, and its usage duration varies from 8-9 hours under optimal conditions to 5 hours depending on factors such as load, gain setting, and Bluetooth usage. Additionally, the unit includes an auto power off feature that automatically shuts it down after approximately 30 minutes of inactivity.

The iFi iDSD Diablo 2 provides the option to be powered by mains, along with the bundled 5V iPower 2 power supply featuring Active Noise Cancellation II to eliminate incoming EMI and RFI noise. Unlike the FiiO Q7, there is no manual switch to enable the DC desktop mode and bypass the internal battery. The transition to mains power is automatic once the battery is fully charged, then only utilizing battery power when needed.

Power output and noise

The original Diablo 1 was a powerful portable DAC/amp, but its low gain setting was too strong for sensitive earphones. The iFi Diablo 2 is an even more powerful and additionally it addresses this concern by introducing a third gain setting and iFi’s iEMatch technology. This enhancement is specifically designed for high-sensitivity headphones and earphones, effectively eliminating background noise and expanding the volume range. Users can easily activate this feature using a switch located underneath, with separate options available for both 6.35mm and 4.4mm headphone jacks.

The Diablo 2 provides three power modes: Normal for IEMs, Turbo for mid-sensitivity headphones, and Nitro for demanding headphones, with a maximum output of 19.2V. The 4.4mm jack has a maximum RMS power output of 19.2V/611mW (600Ω), 7.4V/1710mW (32Ω), and 11.5V/2060mW (64Ω). Additionally, the Diablo 2 features a unique design that enables it to deliver a maximum peak power of approximately 5.2W (32Ω) per channel, providing exceptional headroom.

For a rough estimation of the Diablo 2’s performance, the Focal Clear Mg reaches pretty loud halfway through the volume range (normal gain/4.4mn). Similarly, the sensitive FiiO FX15, with the iEMatch enabled, also experiences the same volume level. Furthermore, the iFi iDSD Diablo 2 is one of the few portable, battery-powered amplifiers capable of adequately driving the HIFIMAN Susvara. Additionally, when paired with highly sensitive IEMs like the Soundz Avant, the amplifier remains completely silent and free from noise.

As per usual practice, the iFi iDSD Diablo 2 was left playing music for 100 hours before listening evaluation. All headphone cables used for the review are made by Lavricables.

In terms of sound quality, the FiiO Q7 stands out for its technical and transparent sound compared to the warmer Diablo 2, although it may come across as slightly sharper and less natural. The Q7 delivers a more dynamic and powerful sound than the Diablo 2, but with drier and leaner textures, making it less forgiving and more revealing. Both devices offer similar resolution, with the Q7 having slightly sharper imaging but lacking the holographic and immersive soundstage found in the Diablo 2.

Vs the FiiO Q7

In the end

Species are in a constant state of evolution, adapting to their environment to improve upon their predecessors. This evolution can be seen in the transition from the Diablo to the Diablo 2, which boasts enhanced power, superior sound quality, and a host of new features. However, this advancement comes at a price – the Diablo 2 is larger and more expensive than its predecessor. The iFi Diablo 2 is part of a new wave of products that serve as both portable and desktop audio devices. While it offers flagship-level performance and features that justify its cost, a slightly lower price point would make it even more competitive and provide better value for consumers.
