Burson Audio

Burson Audio, an esteemed audio manufacturer hailing from Australia, has gained recognition for their remarkable DAC/amp combo units such as the Playmate 2, the Conductor, and the Soloist. However, what many may not be aware of is that Burson Audio was among the pioneers in the audio industry to advocate against the utilization of IC op-amps in the audio signal path. Instead, they have ingeniously crafted their own op-amps using discrete components. These op-amps, known as the renowned Burson supreme sound op-amps, have undergone two decades of relentless research and development, now reaching their impressive 7th generation.

Burson V7 Vivid Review

Burson Audio has recently introduced their V7 Pro series, marking a significant milestone after twenty years of unwavering dedication to research and development. This latest release, which represents the 7th generation of op-amps from the company, builds upon the success of the highly praised V6 op-amps. By integrating state-of-the-art circuitry and meticulous craftsmanship, the new version not only delivers exceptional sound quality but also has remarkable aesthetics.

Technical highlights

The PCB design of the Burson V7 is meticulously crafted with up to 8 layers, strategically dividing the signal path, grounding, and shielding into separate layers. Despite the higher cost associated with this approach, it is considered the optimal method for designing analog amp circuits. Consequently, the Burson V7 op-amp not only offers a more compact and practical solution but also a shorter, optimized signal path. Moreover, its enhanced design ensures exceptional protection against airborne interference.

The V7 has been specifically designed to function flawlessly even under high temperatures. To ensure this, it is furnished with an innovative high-density aluminum shell. This shell efficiently disperses heat from every layer of the PCB into the surrounding air, while simultaneously providing protection to the delicate components housed within. With its practical and elegant design, the V7 is capable of accommodating a higher idling current, thereby elevating the audio quality and enhancing overall stability.

Burson Audio utilizes premium components that are meticulously calibrated and fine-tuned in a controlled environment to replicate real-world conditions. The Burson V7 op-amp is equipped with reverse voltage protection and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Aesthetics and build quality

The op-amp is typically concealed within the audio device’s chassis, prioritizing functionality over aesthetics. Nevertheless, the Burson V7 op-amp stands out with its exquisite appearance and impeccable design. Despite the presence of dust, I would willingly showcase the chassis without its lid due to the op-amp’s stunning high-density aluminum shell. Not only does it efficiently dissipate heat, but it also has an appealing aesthetic and exceptional craftsmanship.

Two sonic flavors

The Burson V7 op-amp comes in two variations: the Vivid and the Classic. The V7 Vivid is renowned for its dynamic performance, crystal-clear sound, and precise accuracy, making it the perfect option for recording engineers who prioritize utmost precision. It is especially recommended for the initial output stages of DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converters), where transparency is highly appreciated.

The V7 Classic features a revamped output stage that tackles the shortcomings of its forerunner, the V6 Classic. With this enhancement, the V7 Classic achieves the same ultra-low noise level as the V7 Vivid, all while preserving the cherished intimate vocals and dazzling highs that V6 Classic enthusiasts adore. Moreover, it delivers enhanced dynamics and precision in the lower frequencies, striking a perfect equilibrium between enjoyment and gravitas.

Compatibility

The Burson V7’s compact dimensions (15mm x 13mm x 19mm) make it versatile for a wide range of applications, fitting seamlessly from computer sound-cards to DACs and amplifiers, provided there is sufficient height clearance. In cases where vertical space is limited, the Burson Audio 35mm extension leads can be purchased to facilitate horizontal op-amp positioning.

Both the Vivid and Classic versions of the Burson V7 op-amps come in dual and single configurations to cater to various usage needs. It is crucial to accurately determine the type of op-amp you intend to replace before making a purchase. During installation, it is essential to ensure the correct positioning and orientation of the op-amp. The Burson Audio website offers tutorial videos and manuals to assist in identifying and installing the op-amps. The process is simpler than it may seem, especially if your audio device is designed for easy op-amp rolling.

Working temperature

The V7 Vivid op-amps operate at elevated temperatures compared to the stock IC op-amps, resulting in an increase in the temperature of your audio device’s chassis. The extent of this temperature rise is contingent upon the number of V7 op-amps employed and the heat dissipation capabilities of the chassis. Fortunately, the Playmate 2 incorporates a chassis that functions as a substantial heat sink, resulting in only a slight increase in temperature that does not warrant significant concern.

Associated gear

Burson provided a set of dual and single V7 Vivid op-amps to upgrade the op-amps in the Burson Audio Playmate 2. During the evaluation, the stock power adapter of the Playmate 2 was swapped out for the Burson Super Charger. I used the same headphones as in the original Burson Playmate 2.

Moreover, I took the chance to try out the V7 Vivid in the Aune X8 XVIII DAC, which features a single removable op-amp. Unfortunately, the op-amp socket is inconveniently located at the bottom of the chassis, requiring the device to be placed upside down or sideways to accommodate the V7.

Listening impressions with the V7 Vivid

Caution: The listening experiences mentioned are specific to the V7 Vivid op-amps and do not pertain to the V7 Classic op-amps, as they are expected to have a distinct sound compared to the Vivid ones. You can find the V7 Classic op-amp review here.

Those familiar with the Burson Playmate 2, either as owners or readers of my review, are aware of its impressive sound capabilities. This device seamlessly blends exceptional musicality and analog timbre with competitive technical features. However, it is worth noting that the technical aspects are not class-leading, there is room for improvement in terms of transparency and clarity. Additionally, the noise floor may be slightly higher than desired when using sensitive earphones.

Following the replacement of the stock op-amps with the Burson V7 Vivid, a significant change was noted in the background noise levels. My belief was that IC op-amps are superior in noise performance compared to discrete components, however, this assumption was proven wrong. Interestingly, the Playmate 2 experienced a decrease in noise and a quieter sound output even with sensitive earphones like the FiiO FX15. Hence, there is no need to be concerned about the Burson V7 Vivid’s discrete circuitry as it does not introduce any unwanted noise and might even reduce the internal noise of your device.

More listening impressions

The Playmate 2 experienced an enhancement in detail extraction as a result of reducing noise and enhancing blackness. This led to a more resolving sound quality, bringing out finer nuances that were previously unheard in the recording. Despite these improvements, the Playmate 2 maintained its natural flow and non-analytical character. By replacing the IC’s with V7 Vivid op-amps, the Playmate 2 saw an increase in clarity, definition, and transparency without compromising its natural and organic timbre. The overall musical and engaging qualities described in the original review were preserved, now accompanied by significantly improved technical performance thanks to the Burson V7 Vivid op-amps.

The Burson V7 op-amps live up to their name by delivering vibrant and lively sound. They excel in providing quick and precise bass, enhancing clarity in the mid-range, and boosting energy in the treble without sacrificing richness. Compared to stock op-amps, they create a broader and more spacious soundstage that extends both horizontally and vertically.

Burson V7 Vivid

Vs the Muses

The Burson V7 Vivid op-amps deliver a neutral and linear sound, without emphasizing or suppressing any part of the frequency range. The sound quality is neutral in temperature, not excessively cold but also not as warm as the Muses op-amp that I previously had in the Aune X8 XVIII DAC. Comparing it to the V7 Vivid, the Muses op-amp provided a thicker and slightly more immersive soundstage, while the V7 Vivid offered superior layering and more precise imaging. Moreover, the V7 Vivid op-amp delivered wider dynamics and a more impactful low-end, although not as visceral, but with improved clarity and definition compared to the Muses. Additionally, the V7 op-amp exhibited a more refined and resolving treble without introducing any brightness or glare.

Concluding

I was pleasantly surprised by the remarkable engineering achievement of the V7 Vivid op-amp. Its performance exceeded my expectations, offering a level of technicality and transparency that surpasses the highly regarded Texas Instruments NE op-amps. Additionally, the V7 Vivid op-amp delivers a more natural and harmonious timbre, further enhancing its appeal.

However, it is important to note that the sonic variances mentioned above are not overly pronounced. Replacing the stock op-amps with the V7 Vivid will not completely transform your audio device by drastically altering its tonal balance and sonic character. The differences are indeed audible, but they are not as drastic as night and day. Instead, they contribute to fine-tuning the device, enhancing its sonic behavior. It is crucial to understand this before embarking on the op-amp rolling adventure.

V7 & V6 op-amps

In the end

Is it worth replacing the stock IC op-amps of an audio device with the Burson V7 Vivid op-amps? If you have everything else set up and you are looking to refine the sound, then the answer is a resounding yes. Despite common beliefs, the Burson V7 Vivid op-amps offer improved technical performance and reduced noise compared to stock ICs. Additionally, they deliver a harmonious and melodious sound that can elevate your listening experience. While the differences in sound may not be as drastic as when changing vacuum tubes, the audible effects are significant and greatly enhance the overall sound quality, making the switch to Burson V7 Vivid op-amps a worthwhile investment.
