Compact and powerful

ddHiFi TC44Pro E3

For readers that are not familiar with ddHiFi’s naming scheme, the TC44 designation refers to the company’s series of portable USB DAC dongles with a 4.4mm output, which are offered in various form factors and sizes. Notable examples within this range are the ddHiFi TC44Pro M3, the ddHiFi TC44Pro, and the ddHiFi TC44Pro.

The latest addition to the lineup is the ddHiFi TC44Pro E3, a compact and lightweight USB DAC dongle that packs a lot of power for its size.

The ddHiFi TC44Pro E3 is equipped with dual CS43198 DAC chips, followed by dual SMG8262 op-amps in a fully balanced architecture. The device supports sampling rates up to 384kHz/32bit PCM and native DSD256, but it doesn’t support EQ or other sound tweaks except gain switching.

Design and layout

Typical for ddHiFi, the TC44Pro E3 has a modern – industrial design with a predominantly metal exterior and an outer appearance that is minimal, yet premium and attractive. An ordinary, rectangularly shaped chassis with cleverly layered surfaces that add visual depth and unique elegance.

ddHiFi is the only brand that uses an integrated dual-port design that houses both the 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs in the same plug, thus saving space and reducing the bulk of the device. The opposite side houses a high quality USB type-C port. Measuring 44.3×17.5×11.6mm and weighing 13.6g, the TC44Pro E3 is very compact and lightweight, actually it must be the most powerful DAC dongle at this size.

The TC44Pro E3 is also equipped with three small buttons that have different shapes for easy blind usage. The two bigger ones are for raising or lowering the volume, while the smaller one is for gain switching. They are practical but people with larger fingers might find them too small and difficult to press. A tiny LED at the opposite side will light yellow to indicate high gain while another one will light blue for PCM and green for DSD material. The volume is adjusted in 60 independent steps within two gain settings (high and low).

Accessories

The package includes a 8cm long type-C USB cable with two straight plugs that is also available with straight to L-shaped or dual L-shaped plugs as an optional accessory. It is a high quality artisan cable with aluminum plugs that visually match the appearance of the TC44Pro E3.

Power output and efficiency

Thanks to the independent SMG8262 op-amps, the ddHiFi TC44Pro E3 produces 175mW/32Ω from the 3.5mm and 510mW/32Ω from the 4.4mm outputs. It is more powerful than similar USB DAC dongles that are not equipped with independent amplifier op-amps and able to drive most earphones, as well as sensitive headphones, like the Aune SR7000. The noise floor is exceptionally low and the device is well shielded against EMI but it gets a little warm under stress conditions.

The power was measured at 0.15A, typical for such power output and not more than the competition.

Listening evaluation

The ddHiFi TC44Pro E3 is a neutrally tuned and transparent source that doesn’t have any specific sonic character of its own, letting the earphones do their job without added coloration.

The sound is crystal clear and well defined with excellent technical performance and fidelity for the category. The treble is just a bit more prominent with a mildly unforgiving nature, so it can sound a little hot with already bright earphones or lesser quality recordings. It is sparkling, airy and resolving but not too clinical or artificial. The midrange is alive and tonally balanced, with good articulation and precision, albeit a little flat and not that harmoniously intense. The bass is fast, tight and controlled with good dynamic range and excellent timing even under stress conditions but slightly lean and dry.

The overall presentation tends to focus on technical accuracy and definition rather than producing weighty and full bodied textures. The timbre is mostly natural and realistic but not that organic or completely devoid of some digital glare. The TC44Pro E3 might not be the most expressive or warm source but it is ideal for critical listening and it can definitely become musical and engaging with the right earphone combination.

With such technical competency and transparency, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the soundstage is wide and spacious with class-leading imaging and depth layering. Not the most holographic or immersive one but still able to handle everything you throw at it without never bottlenecking the earphones.

Vs the competition

There are dozens other USB DAC dongles at this price point, each one with its own unique sonic character, that is vain to do a selective audio comparison. You can read similar reviews and reach your own conclusions.

What matters the most, is that the TC44Pro E3 is the most compact and lightweight USB DAC among the competition with such high output power. If size and weight really matter for you but you don’t want to skip on power, then the ddHiFi TC44Pro E3 ticks all the boxes. As an example look at the photo below to see how it compares physically to the NICEHCK Octave that offers the same amount of power.

In the end

The ddHiFi TC44Pro E3 is premium looking and very well made USB DAC dongle that earns its place in the market, not only because it offers stellar sound quality but most importantly because it manages to provide such high power from a size that small.

ddHiFi became innovative with the TC44Pro E3 and instead of making just another USB DAC dongle with the same features, they managed to beat the competition by shrinking its size while raising the power. The TC44Pro E3 is the David that easily beats the Goliath and deserves your close attention.
