SMSL PS200 PRO
The SMSL PS200 PRO is a compact sized and affordable desktop DAC without a headphone amplifier. It is an upgraded version of the SMSL PS200 but without the Bluetooth connectivity. Please refer to the following image to check the differences.

Technical overview
The PS200 PRO is equipped with one piece of the latest ES9039Q2M chipset and a XMOS XU316 receiver that supports low latency decoding with sampling rates up to 768kHz/32bit PCM, DSD512 and MQA.
It has a built-in low noise power supply, a dedicated clock circuitry to keep jitter low and an analog output stage that is designed with four OPA1612A op-amps.
The device is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android (with a USB OTG cable), iOS, Sony PS5 and the Nintendo Switch operating systems.
(You can download the Windows driver here)
It doesn’t need external power to operate when used in USB DAC mode, but you must have 5V DC power connected to the USB type-C input when utilizing the optical and coaxial inputs.
The power consumption of the device in USB DAC mode was measured at 0.38A, so it is not ideal for use with a phone as a transport as it is going to drain its battery quite fast. In such cases it is recommended to use a USB power hub to preserve the phone’s battery.

Design and connectivity
Measuring 100mm x 84.7mm x 23mm and weighing 168.5g, the PS200 PRO is extremely compact and lightweight. It is not that larger or heavier than a portable USB DAC, it can fit virtually anywhere, while you can also throw it in your bag together with your laptop. Just remember not to use heavy RCA interconnects or it may flip upside down.
The main frame of the chassis is made from CNC machined aluminum in a smooth black finish, however the front and back panels are from high quality plastic compound. The design is simple and ergonomic, it has a plain rectangular shape with smoothly rounded edges and corners, very practical and easy to use.
At the front face there is a power on/off button that also doubles as the input selector, together with five notification LEDs. One each for the USB, optical and coaxial inputs, one to note MQA decoding and another one that changes colors according to the input sampling rate.
(green – 44.1/48kHz, blue – 88.2/96kHz, red – 176/192kHz, carmine – 352/384kHz, cyan – 705/768kHz, white – DSD)
At the back there is a USB type-C input, an UAC mode selector switch, optical and coaxial digital inputs, as well as fixed 2V stereo RCA outputs.

Listening evaluation
For the listening evaluation of the PS200 PRO, I have used the Aune N7 headphone amplifier, together with various headphones, like the Aune SR7000 and the Meze Audio 105 Silva.
The sonic performance of the SMSL PS200 PRO is really outstanding considering its very affordable price. A few years ago someone would have to invest a lot more money to get the same kind of audio quality.
Typical for SMSL, the sound signature of the PS200 PRO is characterized by its exceptional neutrality and the most linear frequency response. It is a completely transparent and achromatic DAC that doesn’t induce any sonic character or coloration of its own. However, it doesn’t sound as lifeless or sterile as past models of the brand used to do.
The inner topology hasn’t changed much since then, SMSL is still using the same op-amp configuration in the analog stage. The actual sonic differences come from the DAC chip, the latest ESS generation is more mature sounding than the previous one. The brand new ES9039Q2M is less flat and emotionally empty than the ES9038Q2M, with lower amounts of digital artificiality and treble glare, at least in such simple circuit implementations that don’t incorporate any sophisticated output stages.
More listening impressions
The treble of the PS200 PRO is vivid and a bit forward but not too bright or sharp. It is brilliant and crystal clean but not fatiguing even when combined with brighter components. Resolution and detail retrieval are impressive for the category, you can’t imagine how deep inside the recording the PS200 Pro will let you reach, yet it never feels as too analytical or boring. It is pretty unforgiving though, so you might need to do some clever matching with the rest of the audio chain in order to listen to lower quality recordings.
The mid-range is absolutely neutral with excellent definition and precise articulation. Don’t expect much harmonic richness or organic textures but you wouldn’t be buying a $89 DAC from SMSL if you were seeking for those qualities. What matters the most, is that despite the relative lack of emotional depth and expression, the PS200 Pro doesn’t sound lifeless or clinical. It can connect the listener with the music, especially when combined with the right audio gear and let it do the trick.
The neutrally tuned low-end might sound a little flat and lean, without that much weight or elasticity but it stands out for its technical performance that far exceeds all expectations for the category. Fast, tight and precise with class-leading control and definition, the bass of the PS200 Pro can easily handle the most intricate music, guaranteeing that the listener is not going to miss a single note.

Not only for music listening
Thanks to its unparalleled transparency and complete absence of coloration, the SMSL PS200 PRO is ideal for professional music production where it can easily form the basis of a budget monitoring system. It is also very good for gaming thanks to its low latency and the most precise imaging. The soundstage is quite spacious and wide with strong positioning cues around a focused center but not that holographic or deeply layered.
In the end
The SMSL PS200 Pro is an affordable desktop DAC with sonic transparency and neutrality never imagined before at this price point. Technically precise, very silent and musically satisfying, it will upgrade the sound quality of any PC, laptop and TV or give new life to an old CD player.
SMSL is constantly setting new standards in entry-level audio, making it better and better, gradually closing the gap between budget and more expensive audio components, and the SMSL PS200 PRO stands out as the perfect example.
