Today’s review is about the Creative Sound Blaster G8, a DAC and headphone amplifier with dual USB type-C inputs, that also features special gaming and mixing functions.

The Creative Sound Blaster G8 was kindly provided free of charge in exchange for an honest review. I didn’t receive monetary or any other kind of compensation and I don’t use affiliate links.

The price of the Sound Blaster G8 is 149,99€ and you can buy it directly from Creative’s online shop.

Creative Labs

Creative Technology or better known as Creative Labs or just plain Creative, is one of the most famous audio brands thanks to its legendary Sound Blaster sound cards.

It is essentially the first brand that focused on improving audio performance for PC multimedia and gaming applications, helping an entire generation to enjoy high quality sound.

The brand also expanded into making headphones, DACs, speakers and portable audio devices, but Sound Blaster still remains their most successful and celebrated product.

Creative Sound Blaster G8

The Creative Sound Blaster G8 is a Hi-Res gaming DAC and headphone amplifier that goes beyond simple gaming applications. It is the first DAC to feature dual USB type-C inputs, allowing the user to stream and mix audio from two USB devices simultaneously while it also supports Dolby Audio and Surround Sound.

Technical Overview

Creative doesn’t disclose the DAC chip but looking closer at the board inside reveals that it is a single CS43198 by Cirrus Logic that supports sampling rates up to 384kHz/32bit PCM.

The headphone amplifier is Creative’s custom-designed “Xamp” discrete bi-amplifier that drives the left and right channels individually. Actual power output is not specified but Creative claims that the amp is capable of driving 8Ω to 600Ω loads with an output impedance as low as 1Ω.

Connectivity

The Sound Blaster G8 is an all-in-one media hub where you can connect gaming consoles, mobile devices, PCs and analog audio sources through its various inputs.

The device features dual USB type-C inputs, HDMI ARC and optical digital inputs, as well as a 3.5mm line input. Audio is delivered either through the 4-pole 3.5mm CTIA headphone jack or the 3.5mm line output while a digital optical output is also available to route data to an external DAC. A handy microphone input is located at the front.

Design and Controls

Measuring 125.7x 90.7×52.4mm, the Sound Blaster G8 features a compact, desktop-friendly, low-profile design with a lightly angled top panel that aims for simplicity and ease of use.

The minimalist top panel is dominated by two rotary knobs, a larger one at the right side for volume control, and a smaller one at the left side for adjusting the game/voice balance.

Three rectangular buttons are conveniently located under the volume knob for quick access to the SBX functions, sound modes (direct or DSP) and to select the output (phone or line). Two extra switches at the back are used to toggle gain low or high and select between the optical or HDMI inputs.

All inputs and outputs are located at the back, except the dedicated microphone and headphone jacks that are to be found at the left front edge. Above them sits an oversized Sound Blaster LED logo that lights up when the device is powered on, but the unit lacks a dedicated power or standby switch.

The whole chassis, including the rotary knobs and buttons, are all made from high quality plastic, a construction that is lighter than if it had used aluminum but doesn’t inspire long term confidence. Moreover, the two knobs have a mirror-like finish that most chances are that is going to fade over time, while it also catches fingerprint smudges.

The Dedicated Software

Just like all other Sound Blaster cards, G8 supports Creative’s famous Sound Blaster acoustic engine that allows various audio enhancements specifically designed for gaming. For more traditional users Creative also made sure to equip the G8 with a fully customizable 10-band Equaliser.

The G8 also features Creative’s “Scout Mode”, a proprietary algorithm that analyses the battlefield soundscape in real-time and delivers the opponent’s location with pinpoint accuracy.

Crystal Voice is another useful feature that applies noise reduction and acoustic echo cancellation to the connected microphone, making the user’s voice come through more clearly and better defined.

In order to access and customize all these features, someone must download and install the Creative App that is available for Windows and Mac OS.

System requirements can be found here.

Creative’s software suite allows users to customize all audio playback and recording parameters, set-up the EQ, configure additional speakers and headphone setups, save and load various profiles and perform firmware updates.

Although I no longer play games, I spent time watching movies with the Sound Blaster G8 and can confidently report that audio latency is practically nonexistent.

Output Power and Noise

Output power is not specified but G8’s headphone amplifier is quite potent, easily driving high impedance headphones, like the SIVGA Peng, as well as most planar magnetic headphones, like the HIFIMAN Arya Organic. Earphones also play well with the G8 as it doesn’t produce much hissing noise, as long as you don’t forget to set gain at low.

The G8 doesn’t have a balanced headphone output but the single ended 3.5mm is already powerful enough and will come very handy for users that don’t have balanced headphones.

Listening Evaluation

I know that most people will probably buy the Creative Sound Blaster G8 for its gaming features and advanced mixing capabilities rather than for dedicated audiophile music listening. Even so, I am happy to report that the sound quality is really impressive, far exceeding all expectations.

Whether you are going to use the line or phone outputs, the stock voicing of the G8 is neutral and clean with a touch of warmth and good levels of transparency. The truth is that the G8 sounds at least as good as similarly priced DAC/amps by other more “audiophile” companies, like FiiO and SMSL.

The bass is punchy and dynamic, especially from the headphone output that adds more heft and better control than the line output. It sounds weighty and full-bodied without becoming dry, while remaining fast and controlled with satisfying layering and definition for its category. The G8 excels with gaming and movie watching, but it is also more than capable of handling serious music listening.

More Listening Impressions

The mid-range is slightly warm and tonally balanced without lacking in transparency and clarity. The timbre is natural and realistic enough with rounded and full bodied textures. The G8 might not be that expressive and harmoniously rich but it doesn’t sound clinical as some other gaming DAC/amps, being able to connect the listener with his favorite tunes.

The treble is extended and exciting without steering into brightness or sharpeners. It is relatively smooth to the ear, with a natural timbre that doesn’t expose much digital artificiality. The higher frequencies lack in refinement and the G8 is not the most resolving DAC in its category, however it doesn’t obscure details that are useful to make the music sound alive and enjoy competitive gaming and movie watching.

The soundstage is surprisingly wide and open, with stellar imaging and precise positional cues that make a full symphony orchestra sound convincing while also enhancing the gaming experience. You can also use Scout Mode to enhance the sense of space and focus within the soundstage, but during music listening it can sometimes make the presentation feel slightly artificial and overly stretched.

In the End

The Creative Sound Blaster G8 is an affordable DAC and headphone amplifier that delivers very good sound quality for music listening while offering a rich feature set for gaming, mixing and movie watching.

Creative may no longer be the dominant force in desktop audio, but the company still provides excellent solutions for PC and multimedia use that can also satisfy audiophile needs, at very affordable prices.
