FiiO FD15

The FiiO FD15 is a single dynamic driver earphone and serves as the successor to the highly praised FiiO FD5. This latest model incorporates numerous technological advancements compared to its predecessor, yet it is notably more budget-friendly, priced at $159 instead of $299. This lower price point does not compromise the included accessories, although the premium carrying case has been omitted.

Technical highlights

FiiO presents the FD15, featuring an advanced driver design that incorporates a 13.8mm magnalium diaphragm DLC driver. This innovative diaphragm, composed of a blend of magnesium and aluminum, ensures exceptional hardness and minimal distortion. Additionally, the DLC gasket enhances both rigidity and flexibility, contributing to superior sound quality.

The FD15 is equipped with a W-shaped driver suspension that enhances the effective vibration area by 30%, along with an 8.6mm voice coil that boosts driver power by 78%. Its external 1.5T magnet design guarantees reliable performance, while Tesla Valve’s patented Bass Enhancement technology delivers rich, high-quality bass. Additionally, a frontal acoustic prism with adaptive phase adjustment improves high-frequency diffusion.

Design and ergonomics

The FiiO FD15 shares a design and aesthetic reminiscent of the FD5; however, it incorporates numerous subtle innovations aimed at enhancing ergonomics that may not be immediately apparent.

The angle of the sound nozzle relative to the wearing surface along the Y-axis has been meticulously calibrated, increasing it by 6.7⁰ without altering the nozzle’s length. This adjustment allows the earphones to fit more securely within the ear canal, greatly improving both comfort and stability during use.

The conventional rigid right-angled cylindrical MMCX design has been reimagined into a more ergonomic curved form, allowing for improved comfort across a broader spectrum of ear sizes. This innovative shape alleviates discomfort that arises from the earphone pressing against the back of the ear. Additionally, FiiO has reduced the contact area between the front of the in-ear monitor (IEM) and the ear, enhancing the fit by minimizing movement due to gaps and decreasing friction.

The combination of numerous subtle yet significant innovations and the compact cylindrical design of the FD15 results in a comfortable and stress-free wearing experience, even with a weight of 12g per unit. The FiiO FD15 provides enhanced comfort compared to the FD5, ensuring a secure fit along with excellent passive noise isolation.

Build quality and appearance

The FD15 has outstanding craftsmanship and a polished finish, presenting a sleek and elegant aesthetic. Its design resembles that of a fine jewel, setting it apart from conventional earphones. The ear shells of the FD15 are crafted from 316L medical-grade stainless steel through a specialized powder metallurgy process, followed by hand polishing and electroplating. The FiiO FD15 is offered in both obsidian black and silver finishes.

Stock cable

The FiiO FD15 features a premium detachable cable equipped with MMCX connectors. This cable is crafted from a blend of Furukawa monocrystalline copper and Furukawa monocrystalline silver-plated copper, in a braided configuration. It comprises four substantial strands, each containing 100 copper wires and 20 silver-plated wires, resulting in a total of 480 wires and a cross-sectional area of 22 AWG.

The cable is equipped with a straight twist-lock swappable audio plug, offering both 3.5mm and 4.4mm options in the package. This high-quality cable is designed for durability, resisting tangles and minimizing microphonic noise. However, it is heavier and thicker than what is typically preferred for portable applications.

Please consult the accompanying image for the accessories included in this package. This is a comprehensive bundle; the only item not present from the original FD5 package is the premium carrying case, which has been replaced with a standard plastic version that resembles a Lego brick.

Accessories

Sensitivity and associated gear

The FiiO FD15 features an impedance of 32Ω and a sensitivity of 112dB/mW, making it easy to drive. For optimal performance, it is recommended to pair it with high-quality portable devices such as the FiiO KA17 and FiiO M11S, as the FiiO FD15 performs exceptionally well and entry-level equipment may not fully showcase its capabilities.

Listening impressions / Black nozzle

With the FD15, FiiO has chosen to move away from the V-shaped tuning characteristic of the FD5, opting instead for a more neutral sound profile. The FD15 features a subtly neutral and well-balanced tuning, placing greater emphasis on the mid-range frequencies rather than the extremes of the audio spectrum.

The sub-bass is sufficiently extended without being overly pronounced, allowing it to reproduce the lowest notes while maintaining balance with other frequencies. The tuning is designed to provide a substantial rumbling bass that remains even and well-balanced. The bass response is nearly neutral, featuring a slight emphasis on mid-bass that contributes warmth and fullness to the sound while preserving tonal accuracy. Although it may not be reference-level accurate, the tonal quality is adequate for enjoying acoustic and classical music with minimal compromises. The bass is characterized by precision, clarity, and a well-defined layered structure, rich in micro details. The driver exhibits quick recovery without noticeable cup reverb. Overall, the technical performance is very competitive, with tight and controlled bass that delivers satisfying dynamic contrast and physical impact, creating an impression of a significantly more expensive earphone.

Closer look

More listening impressions

The mid-range of the FD15 is exceptionally well-balanced, showcasing an equal presence from the lower to the upper mids, with the latter being slightly elevated to ensure clarity and definition, avoiding any harshness or overly loud sounds. Individuals who are sensitive to this frequency range will appreciate the FD15, as it emphasizes the mids without causing the fatigue often associated with heightened upper mid-range frequencies. The pitch is precise and accurate, while the timbre remains natural and realistic.

The FD15 excels in expressiveness and resolution, effortlessly reproducing the entire harmonic spectrum. The sound is rich and harmoniously intense, with textures that are lush and well-proportioned, providing a satisfying body weight without being dry or thin, and featuring nicely rounded edges. Overall, the mid-range performance of the FD15 is truly remarkable, delivering sound in a lifelike and effortless way that deeply engages the listener and fosters a strong connection with the music.

And more

The treble exhibits a smooth and controlled quality, maintaining a good level of extension and transparency. It delivers a vibrant and energetic sound without veering into brightness or sharpness, gently tapering off to prevent any harsh spikes. While the FD15 may not appeal to those who prefer a bright, highly detailed, and analytical sound profile, it will certainly resonate with listeners who are sensitive to brightness. The detail retrieval and resolution are satisfying, though not class leading, as hybrid earphones often outperform in this area. However, they cannot match the cohesive and holistic sound signature of the FiiO FD15, nor can they replicate the treble’s organic and natural presentation.

The soundstage is impressively expansive, providing ample space and an accurate sense of imaging, with a notable amount of air surrounding the performers. While the depth may not be top-tier and positioning accuracy can falter slightly during more complex musical passages, the FD15 maintains clarity and never feels cluttered or indistinct.

Upside down

Listening impressions / Red nozzle

The FiiO FD15 is equipped with two sets of interchangeable sound nozzles, enabling users to tailor the earphone’s sound profile to their preferences. When using the black nozzle as the baseline, the red nozzle slightly reduces the amplitude of the upper mid-range and lower treble, while the remainder of the frequency spectrum remains unchanged.

The audible effect observed is characterized by a marginally enhanced bass response, a more pronounced mid-range, and a less emphasized treble. The differences in sound are quite subtle, and the FD15 retains its overall sound signature. It simply presents a warmer and smoother treble, trading off some energy and brightness without becoming overly dark or muffled. The quantity and quality of the bass remain unchanged, but the perception of its prominence is heightened due to the slightly diminished treble. All other technical aspects and resolution are entirely intact, making this an effective method for fine-tuning the FD15 while preserving its core character.

The sound nozzles

Vs the FiiO FD5

The FiiO FD15 closely resembles the FD5 in appearance, featuring only slight cosmetic variations. However, it offers significantly enhanced ergonomics, making it more comfortable for extended wear. Additionally, it is priced at half the initial cost of the FD5, with the only notable omission being the premium carrying case. A really compelling value.

In terms of sound profile, the FiiO FD15 offers a more balanced experience compared to the V-shaped FD5. While the bass on the FD15 is less extended, it is tuned more neutrally with reduced mid-bass emphasis, resulting in improved tonal accuracy. Conversely, the FD5 delivers a fuller and more weighty bass, but the FD15 surpasses it in terms of control and overall technical performance. The midrange of the FD15 is more balanced and prominent, whereas the FD5’s midrange appears somewhat recessed, emphasizing the upper midrange frequencies. The treble on the FD5 is more extended and vibrant, providing greater resolution and detail, but it is also brighter and less smooth than that of the FD15.

Ultimately, neither model is superior to the other; they simply cater to different preferences. Therefore, I would not deem the FD5 as outdated, but if FiiO intends to continue its production, they should consider aligning its price with that of the FD15.

Vs the Simgot EA1000

The Simgot EA1000, priced at $219, features a single dynamic driver complemented by a passive radiator to enhance the bass response. While it is lighter and more compact than the FiiO FD15, it is not necessarily more comfortable. The earphones are packaged with an elegant carrying case, although the included cable, which has a 3.5mm plug, is of lesser quality. Additionally, the EA1000 is equipped with three interchangeable nozzles, providing users with one more option for sound customization.

The tuning of the EA1000 with all three nozzles presents a more V-shaped profile, characterized by a pronounced upper mid-range and enhanced treble response. This tuning resembles a blend of the FiiO FD5 in terms of upper midrange and treble characteristics, while aligning more closely with the FD15 regarding the low-end performance. The EA1000 offers slightly greater resolution and a more technical sound compared to the FiiO FD15, featuring improved treble extension. However, it also exhibits a brighter sound signature, with a hint of sibilance and a slight metallic quality. The bass is more substantial and impactful, delivering a fuller and more visceral presence than the FD15, though it lacks the same speed and control, resulting in less definition and layering.

Vs the Simgot EA1000

In the end

From an objective standpoint, the FiiO FD15 represents a significant enhancement over the FD5 in terms of ergonomics and comfort, all while being priced at half the cost. However, the overall sound profile can be more subjective; some users may favor the FD15’s neutral, balanced, and mid-centric tuning, while others might long for the additional bass depth and the more pronounced treble of the FD5. Personally, I find myself in the former category, as I greatly appreciate the FD15 for classical music listening.

When seen outside the FiiO family, the FD15 offers impressive audio performance for the category as a single dynamic driver earphone. It features a balanced-neutral tuning, a remarkable midrange, and competitive technical capabilities. Although it may not be the most vibrant or resolving option available, it delivers an expressive sound with excellent timbre consistency and a rich musical quality.

The FiiO FD15 exemplifies the principle that simplicity can yield superior results, demonstrating that a well-designed single dynamic driver excels in sound coherence and timbral accuracy. Audiophiles who prioritize musicality and are weary of the numerous iterations of the Harman target curve will find the FiiO FD15 particularly appealing.
